Honda CRF fault codes by MIL blink

Honda’s competition CRF owner’s manuals print a DTC Index keyed by the number of times the MIL blinks. Seven editions from 2010–2020 print 50 rows across 9 blink codes. This page consolidates those editions into one matrix and one searchable index, with the manual edition code and printed page for each.

7 editions 9 blink codes 50 printed rows OEM owner’s manuals

Scope note

This page is a consolidated index of Honda’s printed MIL-blink DTC table, not a repair guide. It reproduces the Function Failure and Symptom/Fail-safe function cells from seven owner’s manuals and does not add diagnostic steps, parts advice, or a determination that a machine is safe to operate.

The set is limited to the 7 editions that print the index: 2010 CRF250R, 2015 CRF250R, 2016 CRF250R, 2017 CRF450R, 2018 CRF250R, 2019 CRF450RX / CRF450R / CRF450RWE, and 2020 CRF450R / CRF450RX / CRF450RWE. The 2022 and later CRF books checked for this page do not print an owner-accessible DTC Index; they refer MIL details to a Honda dealer.

The 2016 book is included as a 2016 edition even though its PDF metadata title reads 2015. The printed cover, URL, and edition code 31KRN720 identify it as the 2016 CRF250R book; the discrepancy is recorded in the edition notes.

The matrix shows why a single page is a better fit than seven edition pages. The manuals share the same DTC Index layout and the same core blink counts, but they differ in model coverage, row count, and MIL threshold. The 2010 and 2017–2020 books use a 4,000 rpm threshold; the 2015–2016 books use 5,500 rpm. The 2010 book records the stay-on value only.

How Honda prints a CRF code

The first column of the Honda DTC Index is a blink count. A printed 12 means the MIL blinks twelve times; it is not a P-code, an SPN, or an FMI value. The manual pairs that count with a Function Failure cell and a Symptom/Fail-safe function cell. This page preserves both cells in the manual’s printed order.

Honda’s MIL explanation adds three reading rules. A long blink counts as ten short blinks. When more than one code is stored, the series runs from the lowest number to the highest. The MIL stays on above a printed engine-speed threshold: 4,000 rpm in the 2010 and 2017–2020 books, and 5,500 rpm in the 2015–2016 books.

The DTC Index is printed on p. 9 and the MIL explanation on p. 7 in every edition in this set. The manuals also mark blink series that cannot be checked with the engine off: blink 12 in the 2017–2020 books; blinks 12, 19, and 69 in the 2010 book; and the same three in the 2015–2016 books, with a note that proper tools are needed. Those notes are reproduced in the edition notes below.

One count, one row

The index does not combine a blink count with a second identifier. A row is the count, the printed function failure, and the printed symptom or fail-safe function. The same count can appear in several editions; the full index keeps one row per edition so the edition-specific symptom wording stays visible.

The nine blink codes

The 50 printed rows collapse to 9 blink counts. The failure wording is shared; the symptom cell varies for blink 1 and 2.

69 No.2 CKP sensor circuit malfunction 3 editions2010, 2015, 2016 Engine does not start; Injector, fuel pump and ignition shut down (2010, 2015, 2016)

Six counts appear in all seven editions: 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, and 12. Blink 19 and blink 69 appear only in the 2010, 2015, and 2016 CRF250R books. Blink 41 appears only in the 2019 and 2020 CRF450 books. The failure wording is identical across editions for every count; the symptom cell is not. Blink 1 and blink 2 read “Engine operates normally” in 2010 and “Poor performance (driveability)” in most later books, while the 2018 CRF250R prints “drivability”. The table records those variants instead of flattening them into one wording.

The two CKP rows are the main structural difference between the CRF250R and CRF450 editions. The 2010, 2015, and 2016 CRF250R books print No.1 and No.2 CKP sensor circuit malfunctions as blink 19 and blink 69. The 2017–2020 CRF450 books stop at blink 12, except for the GP sensor row (blink 41) in 2019 and 2020. The count set is therefore edition-specific even though the table layout is shared.

Which CRF models and years are covered

The set covers two CRF families. The 2010, 2015, 2016, and 2018 editions are CRF250R books. The 2017 edition is the CRF450R; 2019 and 2020 cover the CRF450R, CRF450RX, and CRF450RWE. The 2010–2016 CRF250R books are the only editions with the two CKP rows (19 and 69). The 2019–2020 CRF450 books are the only editions with the GP sensor row (41).

The 2018 CRF250R is also the only edition that prints “drivability” rather than “driveability” in the blink 1 and 2 symptom cells. That spelling is kept. The 2016 PDF metadata title reads 2015; the printed cover, the 2016 URL, and the printed edition code 31KRN720 identify the book as the 2016 CRF250R edition. The page records 2016 and keeps the discrepancy in the edition notes.

The 2022 and later CRF owner’s manuals checked for this page do not print an owner-accessible DTC Index; they refer MIL details to a Honda dealer. The later books in the catalog fall outside the seven editions transcribed here, so they are not merged into this page. The page is limited to the editions that print the table row for row.

Common questions

What is a Honda CRF MIL-blink code?

It is the number of times the MIL blinks, printed in the DTC Index as a count from 1 to 69. It is not an SPN/FMI pair or a P-code.

Why are seven model years on one page?

Each edition prints only 6-8 rows. One consolidated page keeps the shared labels in one place and shows the edition differences without creating seven near-duplicate pages.

Does a blink count identify a failed part?

No. The manual pairs the count with a Function Failure label and a Symptom/Fail-safe function. The page reproduces those labels; it does not diagnose a machine or provide repair steps.

Why does the 2016 manual metadata say 2015?

The PDF metadata title is inconsistent with the printed book. The cover, URL, and edition code 31KRN720 identify the 2016 CRF250R edition, so the page records 2016 and notes the discrepancy.

Are 2022 and later CRF models covered?

No. The later books checked for this page do not print an owner-accessible DTC Index; they defer MIL details to a Honda dealer.

Where can I check the source?

The sources table links each OEM PDF and lists the printed DTC Index and MIL pages. The methodology page explains the source rules used across the archive.
